A free, independent set of tools that make Australia's tax system quicker to understand.
Australian Tax Calculator is an independent website offering free calculators for common Australian tax questions — income tax and take-home pay, HECS-HELP study loan repayments, GST, and capital gains tax. It exists for a simple reason: the official figures are all public, but working out what they mean for you usually involves digging through rate tables and doing fiddly arithmetic. Our calculators do that arithmetic instantly, and just as importantly, they show the working so you can see how the answer was reached.
Every calculator on this site is built directly from the rates, thresholds and formulas published by the Australian Taxation Office. We don't estimate or approximate the rules — we apply them as the ATO sets them out.
Before a calculator is published, its output is checked against the ATO's own worked examples wherever those are available, so the numbers match what the tax office itself would calculate. Each calculator also displays a step-by-step breakdown of every result, which means you're never asked to simply trust a number — you can follow exactly how it was put together.
Tax rates change, so the calculators are reviewed and updated at the start of each financial year. Many of them also let you select earlier financial years, with the rules that applied at the time built in.
Our single source of truth is the Australian Taxation Office at ato.gov.au. Income tax brackets, the Medicare levy, study loan repayment thresholds, the GST rate and capital gains tax rules all come from the ATO's published material.
Australian Tax Calculator is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Australian Taxation Office or any government agency. We're an independent resource that uses the ATO's public information to build helpful tools.
We work hard to keep every calculator accurate and current, but tax is complex and the calculators are designed to give a general estimate rather than a formal tax assessment. They can't capture every individual circumstance, and they don't replace advice tailored to your situation.
If you believe a calculator has produced an incorrect result, we genuinely want to know — accuracy is the whole point of this site. You can reach us using the contact details below.
The calculators and guides on this site provide general information and estimates only. They are not personal tax, financial or legal advice, and they cannot account for the full detail of your individual circumstances.
Before making financial decisions or lodging a return, check your situation with the Australian Taxation Office or a registered tax agent. Australian Tax Calculator is not affiliated with or endorsed by the ATO or any government agency.
The calculators run entirely in your own web browser. When you type in an income or a sale price, that information is used only to display your result on your screen — it is not sent to us, collected, or stored anywhere. You don't need an account, and you're never asked for identifying details to use a calculator.
